The Myth of Florida Man
36 x 48 inches, acrylic on wood
Inspired by the larger-than-life folklore of the American South, The Myth of Florida Man transforms a modern cultural legend into a timeless folk hero. Perched atop a powerful alligator and drifting through the cypress-lined waterways at sunset, the trombonist represents the wild, unpredictable, and often unbelievable stories that have become synonymous with the mythical "Florida Man."
Rather than depicting a specific individual I wanted to reimagine Florida Man as a legendary character of Southern storytelling, a figure who exists somewhere between truth and tall tale. Riding one of the region's most iconic creatures while playing a soulful trombone, he embodies the fearless spirit, eccentricity, and resilience that define folklore throughout the Gulf Coast.
The vibrant sunset, reflective waters, and Spanish moss-draped trees create a dreamlike atmosphere where music, nature, and myth merge into a single narrative. The trombone connects the story to the rich musical traditions of the South, while the alligator symbolizes the untamed wilderness that has inspired generations of stories along the swamps and bayous.
Through bold colors and imaginative storytelling, I wanted to celebrate the way folklore evolves, turning everyday characters into legends. This piece invites viewers to embrace the humor, mystery, and cultural richness of Southern storytelling, where fact and fiction often travel the same winding river.
A compelling work for collectors drawn to contemporary folklore, Southern culture, and narrative art that transforms regional legends into enduring visual myths.
